Ah, the good old days of middle school band, the days of upending your saxophone to empty out the accumulated condensation. Without cleaning out that bell, the saxophone sounds like a flock of ducks with a sore throat. Clean it out and you might hear an angel chorus from your bell.

Whether you (or your child) just came home with a new saxophone, or you’re a seasoned professional, the care and cleaning of your saxophone is incredibly important. Think of it as an investment – by making sure your instrument is clean and well taken care of, you’ll get many more years of musical pleasure out of it. Keeping your saxophone clean may also cut down on costly repairs such as extra pad replacements.

What kind of tools should you look for in cleaning supplies? There are many different brands and tools to choose from, and each with its own merits. At minimum, an absorbent swab to pull through the saxophone is a must, as the accumulation of condensation – ok, spit – will gunk up the pads and cause them to stick. No one likes to hear that annoying *ssschlik* every time you play.

(Pro tip – dollar bills are the usual solvers of the sticky pad problem, but I only use them in extreme circumstances. Dollar bills are filthy. Do you really want that on your precious instrument you’re trying to keep clean? Use pad paper, or even un-gummed cigarette paper to soak up the sticky.)

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Another key tool for saxophones is a mouthpiece brush. You could use your swab to clean it, but the bristles of the brush wiggle out those nasty bits hiding in the corners.

I’ve gathered up five excellent saxophone cleaning kits, each with their own pros and cons. Keep reading to find the best one for your needs.

Reviews of the Best Saxophone Cleaning Kits

1. Luvay Saxophone Cleaning Care kits

Luvay Saxophone Cleaning Care kits with Case (EVA Box) for Clarinet, Flute and Wind & Woodwind instrument
  • 1 x extra large size through cloth: with rope on both ends, easy to pull it through instruments
  • 1 x large size through cloth: with rope on one end

The Luvay cleaning kit comes with 6 pieces – 4 different sized cleaning swabs, a mouthpiece brush, and the carrying case. The cloths are very soft so they won’t scratch the insides of your instrument. They’re also super absorbent for those long practice sessions.

The extra-large cloth has a string pull on both ends, which is very handy to get the inside of your saxophone extra clean. Draw the cloth through until it just starts to come out of the horn, then pull on the other end to bring it back. Do that a few times and any condensation is picked up by the cloth.

The large cloth also has a pull string on one end, and is sized for alto and soprano saxophones, as well as clarinets, flutes, and other wood winds. The medium and small cloths have no string to pull on, but are a good size for external cleaning and polishing.

All the pieces in this kit fit nicely into the carrying case, which in turn fits nicely into an alto, tenor, or bari sax case. The case keeps the different pieces organized so they don’t go floating around your gig bag, never to be seen again.

This kit is a solid choice for any saxophone player, and if you’re a woodwind doubler it’s an all-in-one great choice for all your instruments.

2. Andoer Saxophone Cleaning Care Kit

Andoer Saxophone Cleaning Care Kit Belt Thumb Rest Cushion Reed Case Mouthpiece Brush Mini Screwdriver Cleaning Cloth
  • Includes a sax neck strap, a reed case, a thumb rest, a mouthpiece brush, 4 cleaning cloth and a mini screwdriver.
  • Simple adjustable length of high quality strap; Rubber thumb rest is designed to disperse the the weight into a wider space.

This kit is more than just a cleaning kit. It comes with 9 pieces for cleaning, maintenance, and a few essentials for saxophone players. There are 4 cleaning cloths made of man-made chamois, a very absorbent but gentle cloth, as well as a mouthpiece brush. There is also a mini screwdriver, a reed case, a neck strap, and thumb rest.

The largest of the cleaning cloths has a weighted cord you can use to pull the cloth through the instrument, and it will fit through an alto as long as it’s not folded over itself. Its large size will also work well for a tenor saxophone, but may need a bit of supplementation for a baritone sax. The smaller cloths are for soprano saxes and other woodwind instruments, and also for an alto neck if the largest cloth just won’t go through.

Included in this kit are a few standard pieces of other equipment for saxophone players. The reed case, neck strap, and thumb rest are all things that more advanced players probably either already have or have decided that they don’t need. But as I’ve learned the hard way, it’s always best to have a spare of anything you’ll need.

For beginners the accessory pieces are a great starting point. Having the neck strap will save your arms and hands from having to support the horn. Thumb rests are a matter of personal preference. The standard metal thumb rest on most instruments is pretty small and often results in thumb cramps. By putting this rubber pad over the sax’s thumb rest, you may find yourself playing with better hand position.

The reed case is simple plastic and double-sided to hold two reeds. The case does it’s job, but more advanced players may want to invest in something sturdier and keep this as a backup in case of a reed-splitting disaster.

For more advanced players, ones who know some basic maintenance, the mini screwdriver is a must have for adjusting leaky keys.

There’s something for every sax player in this kit, from the beginner who needs the basics, to professionals who need an emergency backup kit.

3. Yamaha Alto/Tenor Sax Maintenance Kit

Yamaha Alto/Tenor Sax Maintenance Kit
  • Cleaning swab, mouthpiece brush & polishing cloth
  • Cork grease

From one of the most recognized names in the musical instrument world comes this comprehensive cleaning kit. The kit comes with several different pieces that other kits don’t include, such as pipe cleaners for tone holes, and a care and cleaning manual. On the other hand it doesn’t include a mouthpiece brush, but that can be purchased separately.

The cleaning cloths included in this kit is a thin nylon-like material. The thinner cloth makes it through the neckpiece easier. There’s also a weighted string for pulling the cloth through.

One of the features of this kit is the manual that tells you how to best use each piece of the kit, and how often to perform routine care such as greasing your corks (a lip-balm style tube of cork grease is also included in this kit).

Two pieces of this kit are not included in other kits, and are, in my opinion, important tools to have on hand whether you buy this kit or buy them separately. These are the tone hole cleaners and pad papers. Condensation and gunk build up everywhere in your saxophone, including those pesky tiny tone holes. These pipe cleaner-like brushes fit right into them and pull out any materials that are keeping the horn from functioning at its best.

Remember earlier when I mentioned the dollar bill trick? The pad paper will do what that dollar bill would do but better. It also won’t leave the germs of three generations on your instrument.

For anyone who’s especially interested in keeping their horn as clean as when they bought it, you can’t go wrong with this kit designed specifically for cleaning all the parts of your horn.

4. Luvay Alto Sax Saxophone Pad Saver, Brush Cleaner Maintain Care Tool (Yellow)

Luvay Alto Sax Saxophone Pad Saver, Brush Cleaner Maintain Care Tool (Yellow)
  • Made of micro-fiber material,Soft and durable
  • Can be kept both inside and outside of sax

Maybe all you’re looking for is a simple, one step one tool solution to keeping your saxophone clean. The Luvay Pad Saver might just be what you’re looking for.

Made of microfiber strands covering a metal core, this half-brush, half-cloth hybrid can be used to clean the inside of your instrument, and can also be stored inside of it to keep the pads dry. If you do keep this swab inside of your horn, let it dry first. It won’t dry inside the horn and might cause mold and mildew to take up residence in your instrument. Yuck!

The brush comes in different sizes, so order with that in mind. If you play multiple saxophones, you’ll need multiple brushes for the tenor, alto, and soprano horns. It’s not available for baritone saxes, unfortunately.

5. Buytra 10-in-1 Saxophone Cleaning Kit

Buytra 10-in-1 Saxophone Cleaning Kit for Flute Instruments Includes Sax Swab, Cleaning Cloth, Mouthpiece Brush, Cork Grease, Thumb Rest Cushion, Clarinet Screwdriver and Reed Case
  • Saxophone Cleaning Kit- 10 in 1 Clarinet cleaning kit, including a pull through swab, mouthpiece brush, 3 pieces of cleaning cloth, cork grease, mini screwdriver, reed case, thumb rest and a strap
  • Value pack of flute cleaning kit- this kit has essential tools you need to maintain your saxophone, clarinet and flute instruments, rather than buying separately! Very economical

Like the description says, the Buytra kit comes with 10 pieces – 4 cleaning cloths, a mouthpiece brush, cork grease, mini screwdriver, reed case, thumb rest, and a strap. It’s an economical kit for anyone who’s just taking up the saxophone, since it has most of the essentials for care and keeping.

The downside is that if you want higher-end tools, you’ll have to purchase those separately, but if you don’t have those basics, or need a backup, this is a good option.

Final Decision

So which of these cleaning kits should you buy? It depends on your needs. For a great all-in-one kit for a woodwind doubler, the many options of the Luvay Cleaning kit, with the different sized cloths would be my first pick. It’s a no-frills, no extras kit that does exactly what you’d want it to do, and for bari sax players the extra-large cloth is big enough for your horn. For a beginner who may need a bit more than just your standard cleaning supplies, I like the Andoer for its higher quality cloths plus the few essentials for starting up.

Whichever cleaning supplies you choose, don’t delay getting a consistent cleaning routine started every time you play your saxophone. Your teachers, your parents, your audience, and your saxophone will thank you.
